Steve,

I have two primary goals for the user group initially.

[1] We'll be working on "one stop" source for geospatial data in our
region. One component of this will be a list of publicly available
geospatial data for our region. The other component will be and FTP site
where we can host other geospatial data not readily available from other
sources. (An example of this is the aerial photography that you can
purchase from the USDA. We've taken there MrSID mosaic and split into
tiles in JPEG format. I'll have to check with the USDA about
copyright/licensing issues, but that is definitely something we want on
the FTP.) I'll also offer FTP space to other organizations that need a
spot to host publicly available data, but right now I'm limited to about
40 Gigs.

[2] I'm going to experiment with a "community mapping" project. This
project will experiment with the application of open source development
principles to GIS mapping. This will involve the creation of a GIS data
model, and a mechanism to accept and track data submissions. I hope to
work most of the elements of this out in the next few weeks. Then I will
approach some of the local agencies that will have an interest in the
geospatial data being developed in this experiment. I chose something
simple, and something that I am familiar with. We'll be creating a
geospatial data set for survey control points in our region. If this
works out I'd like to try the same thing for a Flood Control System data
set. That will be a little more complex. :]

I'll post news about this on the OpenJUMP Blog when I'm a little farther
along.

Landon

Landon:
I am in Sac and would like to hear about what you will be doing for your
GIS group. It would be great if we could give the front range of the
Rockies a run for their money. And keep on posting about the OpenJump
stuff on your blog, I am really liking it.
Thanks
Steve
