Yes, this problem pushed us out of the mobile market. There is little room for creative exploration in such a tightly controlled market--not only carriers, but also handset manufactures; it's sort of like trying to start a company in the old USSR or the new Putin Russia: huge risks that daddy will take your toys away, even if you invented the toys yourself. You can make money there, for sure, but only if you have or find an inside track. And I think there are limits to the amount of money you can make. If you make too much, well you know what happens then.

Wimax might help.  Or a fast low-power non-assisted GPS chip (ha).
