Ilteris,

Everyone will have a favorite recommendation, but my suggested approach:

- Lean towards an in-car device if you will be using your GPS in the
car exclusively (natch). I take mine in the car, hiking, and on the
motorbike, so use a handheld device (Garmin Rino) across the board.
Generally, devices made for the dashboard have bigger screens and are
geared more towards the navigation/POI functionality. Handheld
devices require in-vehicle mounts and will have smaller screens; they
also, as a broad rule of thumb, tend to store less basemap
information.

- You can use a bluetooth GPS receiver, but usually these are tied to
navigation applications (e.g. Telenav) provided through your carrier.
Logging caps will presumably vary accordingly. Investigate the
complete stack before investing in a device.

- Geostamping images via logging and EXIF is an established process.
A quick search on 'exif geostamping' will provide all sorts of links
to automated scripts, procedures, and the occasional GPS and Camera
duct-tape job.

Bon voyage; I'll be making a similar, but one way, trip later this summer.

- Tyler

Hello List,

I am going to do a cross country trip form NYC to SF this upcoming
month for 15 days. We have a lot of destination points in our way. I
am really excited about this journey since it's the first time I am
going to see "other" side of the US. I am also looking possible ways
of doing blogging and most importantly geotagging my pictures along
the way.

Let me summarize what I am looking for so that you can recommend me
what kind of path I should follow regarding this. I have a Sony
Digital camera which I am going to take most of my pictures. I am
thinking to stay away from my phone's camera (Nokia n80). Instead I
am seriously thinking to buy a GPS device and use its log to synch
with my camera at the end of the journey(by looking and matching
timestamps) so that I can add long/lat coordinates to images EXIF
data. Is this possible? What kind of GPS device should I be looking
for? What's your favourite one? My phone has bluetooth capabilities
so I can use a bluetooth GPS device but then do I need a custom
application on the phone in order to log this data?

I would appreciate any help
best,
ilteris
