The Nokia Symbian OS phones can run an app that shows cell reception as a percentage (with graphs) and show Cell ID information as well.

I think that it may be possible to use one of the USB data cables to connect to a Nokia phone and view that data on a laptop. I definitely remember reading something like this at one point.

I've written apps that do exactly that on Nokia Series 60 (in Python), as have some others (e.g. Christopher Schmidt). If anybody is interested, I'd be happy to share. Unfortunately only one cell tower (the currently active one) can be determined using this API.

Concerning laptop connectivity, the easy option is Bluetooth. With the apps that I wrote, no laptop connectivity was necessary...it used a Bluetooth GPS to correlate cell towers to locations, recorded everything temporarily on the phone, and could then upload it to a server for storage.

Ian,

In case you are considering starting an effort to build coverage area maps, we should talk. If you are doing the driving, you might as well collect cell ID information which we can then use to geo- locate handsets.

Unlikely question of the day....

Anybody know of a device that indicates which network(s) provide reception in a given area? Call it a 'cellular sniffer' if you like...

My hack to get this done is to carry 4 cellphones bound with duct tape. When I'm done using it, it will be the perfect mobile for a baby's crib!!

But I'd prefer a slightly more, er, elegant hack.
