We looked at this issue while working on the Great Britain Historical GIS (www.visionofbritain.org.uk). This page http://www.port.ac.uk/research/gbhgis/aboutthegbhistoricalgis/database/ gives you a look at the database schema we used, which stored things like created from, became part of. Dates were particularly difficult since they varied from precise like April 4th 2004 to in the reign of James the First. We also had to handle durations between the creation and deletion of areas to determine what periods you could draw maps for, for example.
