It's a good link; also cited nearby is:

I think Geoscience Australia may not cover the Australian state of
Tasmania at the same level of detail as portions of the Australian
mainland? It looks like even most of the mainland is not in their
database. For example this image shows available region data and
Tasmania is not covered:

I am also not sure about the resolutions they have. I would like
1:25000. They do have some 1:100000 data for a narrow chunk of
geography not including Tasmania:

Also I'd like something searchable that can synthesize a dataset for
me. There does seem to be some DEM/elevation data such as at the link
below; but it's just a search interface that yields "some files that
the system could find in the area" not really a synthesis of
everything in the specified region:

http://www.geoscience.gov.au/bin/mapserv36?querymode=&mode=browse&zoomdir=1&INPUT_TYPE=auto_rect&INPUT_COORD=115%2C12%3B350%2C229&qlayer=oq&map=%2Fpublic%2Fhttp%2Fwww%2Fgeoportal%2Fgadds%2Fgadds.map&zoomsize=4&mapsize=440+270&imgxy=219.5+134.5&imgext=142.049233+-44.754147+150.647600+-39.468136&map_width=440&map_height=270&min_x=142.049233&min_y=-44.754147&max_x=150.647600&max_y=-39.468136&layer=dem

There is however a nice new WMS server - excruciatingly slow but pretty as heck:

http://mapconnect.ga.gov.au/MapConnect/imf.jsp?accept_agreement=on&site=MapConnect

And sadly it requires you to heh - confirm a license that the data is
free - and then crashes because the license url is missing. So
downloads of extracts fail. Oh well. I told them their site was
borked.

I wonder if Australia has the best data in the world about Australia.
What about the GTOPO30?

   http://edc.usgs.gov/products/elevation/gtopo30/gtopo30.html

   http://edc.usgs.gov/products/elevation/gtopo30/e140s10_tile.html

What is the best data in the world that we can get our hands on? Is
there one place that has a perfect collection of all free data? ;-)
