Quite interesting. FYI you can take a look at gvSIG Mobile project, we
are creating a new free GIS software for mobile devices. Just starting
but we released a working "alpha" some weeks ago. More info at

About remotely data, gvSIG mobile works now with WMS but it will
support other remote services and formats like GML and KML.
