This is a great book to consider, particularly if you would like to touch on alternative ways of mapping and map use.

I am writing a short article (due on Thursday) on the evolution of mapping applications -- from the days of expensive, proprietary software and heavy back-end coding to today's world of mashups, open layers, etc. I would greatly appreciate a few good reading suggestions on the topic (articles, blog postings, etc.). I'm mostly looking for good checklists of milestones, concepts, product releases, etc. What, specifically, makes mapping so much more accessible today than five, ten, or fifteen years ago?

Of course, I will have to distinguish between simple maps (such as, "how to get from our house to grandma's" or "the locations of wireless hotspots in my neighborhood") and complex GIS analysis (for example, one in support of an environmental impact statement). I will also have to distinguish between static maps and interactive, on-line mapping applications. And so forth.

If anyone would like to discuss this off-line, you can reach me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or (541) 543-0525.

Thanks in advance!
