Forwarded job announcement:

The Geographic Information Visualization and Analysis group at the
University of Zurich invites applications for three doctoral research
assistant positions in Geographic Information Science/Geovisualization
each funded for 3 years. The positions, housed in the GIScience Center
of the Geography Department, will start in September 2008, or as soon as
possible thereafter. We are looking for MSc graduates from areas, such
as Computational Geography, Geographic Information Science/GIS,
Geomatics, Maths, Physics, Psychology, Cognitive Science, or Computer
Science. For more background information about the department please
visit us on the Web at http://www.geo.uzh.ch/gia/aboutus/.

1) Context modelling and assessment of geographic relevance for mobile
applications

This project focuses on the development of methods for mobile context
modelling informed by activity theory and assessing the geographic
relevance of geospatial information. The objective is to formalise and
implement these concepts in a prototype mobile application framework.
This research requires experience in GIS, spatial data handling and
quantitative spatio-temporal analysis methodologies as well as
programming skills.

Apply (CV, letter of motivation, transcripts, names and email contact of
referees) electronically in a single PDF document to: Dr. Tumasch
Reichenbacher, [EMAIL PROTECTED] (subject: PhD Relevance
assessment)

2) Representation of geographic relevance in mobile applications

This project focuses on the development of methods for representing
geographic relevance, including relevance-based filtering of features in
the context of mobile geoservices. The objective is to find appropriate
representations and metaphors for the geographic relevance concept and
design suitable tests for an evaluation of these developments. This
research requires experience in GIS, spatial data representation and
handling as well as quantitative spatio-temporal analysis methodologies.

representation)

3) Development and Implementation of Geofoveation (GeoF)

This project focuses on the development of computational models and
methods for improving level of detail management of geographic
information displays by developing a concept we call geofoveation which
is based on the principles of foveal vision. Bridging concepts between
vision and visualization we will explore the potential of foveation in
the geographic domain. The outcome of this project is expected to
deliver a test-bed for evaluating the viewer response in a later
project. To succeed in this position you must have some experience in
image processing and computer graphics, and you should be a fluent
programmer.
