Anselm, Whether MapServer can render from ECW depends a lot of how it was built. Is it built against a GDAL library with ECW support enabled? The ECW depends on the external (not open source) libraries from ERMapper/Leica so they aren't included by default. You might try "gdalinfo --format ecw" if there are gdal binaries corresponding to the MapServer build.
