Dear all,

One of the really tremendous opportunities I had this past year was to
work as the "Scholar Leader" of the Fulbright New Century Scholars
Program (http://www.cies.org/NCS/2009_2010/). The program brought
together approx. 35 professors and experts from around the world to
exchange ideas and build networks focused on ways in which universities
can and do act as innovation drivers and knowledge centers dealing with
significant public policy issues.

The group gathered three times (twice in the Washington, D.C. area and
once in Berlin) over the course of a year and it is amazing what has
come out of these efforts. Members of the group are working on
post-earthquake capacity-building in Haiti, youth empowerment and
development in South Africa, sustainable education in Galapagos,
university parks and capacity building in Brazil among many other efforts.

In addition, a new group was launched by the NCS team that I thought
many on these list serves might be interested in knowing about or even
participating in: Professors Beyond Borders. As the website describes:

Professors Beyond Borders began as a special project of the Fulbright
New Century Scholars 2009-2010 focused on water and sustainable
development. As an independent, non-governmental action network of
academics and professionals, we engage with real world problems that
impact quality of life in diverse communities. For more information,
visit their website:

I am sure the group would be happy to have many of you with your
tremendous expertise think about joining. I understand that the first
university branches are just now being established. Anyone wanting to
know more should contact Prof. Ike Levine Ira Levine <[email protected]>

Best wishes,

Miranda Schreurs
