Department of Environment and Resource Studies (ERS), University of Waterloo,
invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor
rank, in the area of social aspects of water resources. We seek candidates who
can contribute to ERS's transdisciplinary focus on sustainability and
resilience and who can participate in the activities of the newly created
interdisciplinary Water Institute. Applicants should have demonstrated
expertise in the social aspects of water resources. A combination of expertise
in one or more of the following areas is particularly desirable: demand
management approaches to sustainable water futures, particularly in the built
environment; societal and stakeholder perceptions of, and relationships to,
water and water management; gender roles in water management. International
perspectives and experiences also are desirable. The successful candidate will
have a strong commitment to teaching in one or more of these areas.

For four decades, ERS
(www.environment.uwaterloo.ca/ers<http://www.environment.uwaterloo.ca/ers>) has
promoted and advanced transdisciplinary approaches to human-environment
relations. Three broad conceptual themes guide the department's teaching,
learning, and scholarly activities:
* assessing the theoretical foundations and practical implications of
progress toward a sustainable society, and application of this analysis as
a broad context for specific work;
* understanding socio-ecological interrelations as dynamic complex systems
vulnerable to being over-stressed by human activities; and
* examining conventional and alternative social arrangements, including
institutions and tools of governance, as means of improving human
wellbeing and environmental responsibility.
In addition to an undergraduate programme that admits over 100 students
annually, the department offers a master's by thesis and doctoral degrees
(combined admission of about 24 students annually).

The University of Waterloo offers many opportunities for collaboration. ERS is
part of the Faculty of Environment, which also includes four other academic
units (www.environment.uwaterloo.ca<http://www.environment.uwaterloo.ca/>).
The Faculty is distinguished by interdisciplinarity in its commitment to
undergraduate and graduate education, strong research activity, and community
outreach. ERS has important ties with the University's new Water Institute
(http://water.uwaterloo.ca<http://water.uwaterloo.ca/>), an interdisciplinary
hub that facilitates innovative research, education, and training on
sustainable use and management of water resources in Canada and around the
world. ERS is also an active participant in UW's Centre for Ecosystem
Resilience and Adaptation, Interdisciplinary Centre on Climate Change, the
Waterloo Institute for Complexity and Innovation, and the Waterloo Institute
for Sustainable Energy.

Applicants should have: a Ph.D. or equivalent, an active fundable research
program in the social aspects of water resources that is relevant to the
department's transdisciplinary approach to environmental studies, a record of
publication in relevant peer-reviewed journals, and a demonstrated commitment
to high quality teaching at all levels. He or she will supervise undergraduate
and graduate thesis work.

Applicants should submit a letter of application stating career objectives,
approach to learning and teaching, and research goals. Applicants must include
with the letter of application a current curriculum vitae, and names and
addresses of four referees. Review of applications will begin in January 2011.
The application should be sent to Ms. Lynda Connolly, Administrative
Assistant, Department of Environment and Resource Studies, University of
Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, N2L 3G1. Direct inquiries to Ms. Connolly at
telephone 519 888-4567 ext. 32784, fax 519-746-0292, or [email protected]

Salary range will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The
appointment will be effective January 1, 2012.

The University of Waterloo encourages applications from all qualified
individuals, including women, members of visible minorities, native persons,
and individuals with disabilities. All qualified candidates are encouraged to
apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given
priority.
