Associate Professor / Assistant Professor / Lecturer 
in Social Science/Liberal Arts Approaches to Environment and Sustainability

As part of a major initiative to enhance the Hong Kong Institute of Education’s 
growing teaching and research capacities in environmental sustainability, the 
Department of Social Sciences is seeking professionals excited by the prospect 
of contributing their expertise in Social Science and Liberal Arts approaches 
to environmental change and sustainability.  Applications are welcome from 
candidates able to teach in the following and related areas: environmental 
change, sustainability and society; international and global environmental 
governance; environmental ethics and philosophy; environmental justice; 
environment and human rights; animal rights; environmental policy and law; 
sustainable cities, urban environment and transport policy; sustainability 
policy and politics; environmental economics and ‘green economy’; consumption 
and sustainability; environmental citizenship and democracy; and globalization 
and the environment.  Specialization in climate change policy and/or expertise 
in environmental and sustainability policies in Hong Kong and/or Greater China 
will be an asset, as will the ability to teach general education and other 
courses offered by the Department and/or the Faculty, including introductory 
courses in the Social Sciences.  Environmental scientists/environmental science 
educators need not apply as the Institute is adequately staffed in these areas.

The appointee will participate in activities related to teaching, research, 
knowledge transfer and community service.  He/She is expected to contribute to 
curriculum/programme development at both the undergraduate and postgraduate 
levels; attract and co-supervise research post-graduate students; obtain 
research funding from competitive external sources; conduct collaborative 
research that leads to publications in recognized refereed journals; and 
participate in departmental activities and management.   For information on the

Applicants should have a doctoral degree in Social Science/Liberal Arts or 
related disciplines, and have substantial teaching experience at the university 
level.   A record of research leading to refereed publications is essential. 
Applicants for the Associate Professor position should demonstrate strong 
research and publication record.  PhD students in their final year with good 
potential in research may be considered for the rank of Lecturer.

Initial appointment will be made on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract.
