Hi Everyone,

Thanks so much for your suggestions of videos that feature footage of
environmental negotiations. I've pasted a list of compiled responses below.

Hey DG,

The UNFCCC records many of its sessions and makes them available on their
website. There's a lot of boring stuff in there so you have to sort through
to find something interesting. There are also some really good clips on
YouTube. I always use the final plenary from Bali b/c it is so dramatic.
There are a few to choose from:

There's also a film about the negotiations with live footage, although I
haven't had a chance to watch it yet (I hope to soon!):

One that Bill Zartman showed when I took his negotiation class we very
effective, if dated by now. It followed the negotiations leading up to the
creation of what is now the High Commissioner for Refugees (I think it had
a different name originally). I can't remember the title but a resourceful
librarian could find it. It featured George H.W. Bush in his role as UN
Ambassador. I would have seen it in 1983.

A documentary that I used in a negotiation class I did at Harvard was
recommended to me by Jim Sebenius -- it was not international but it gave a
much more visceral feel for the process and was effective in that way. It
was called "Final Offer" and it followed the negotiation of a contract
between a big auto company and the UAW, sometime in the 1980s. Lots of
profanity (though I suspect by today's standards it wouldn't even raise an
eyebrow).

I'm really dating myself here...

Marc

Hi DG,
All the climate COPs seem to have extensive footage online. I often pick a
5-10 minute segment just so the students see what is happening in the room.

Hope all is well!

Hi D.G.,
Sounds like a great topic. In having students do in-class simulations I
have found the Clearinghouse of the Program on Negotiation invaluable:

I have also always found that you get more meaningful negotiations if
students have opportunities to do exercises over the course of the
semester, i.e. you teach them how to negotiate.

All the best,

Įslaug

Check this one out that was secretly filmed at Copenhagen. It's released by
Spiegel.
