Hi Folks,

I usually wouldn't forward political e-mails, but since political science
funding is important to several members of the community, I'm hoping it's
important to all of us. As per the communication below, the House will be
considering an amendment to HR933 (the continuing appropriations bill) to
eliminate all NSF funding of political science. Rep. Coburn and others like
him have threatened political science funding through NSF before and failed
to eliminate it completely, but with congress the way it is, this amendment
is one of many that could be horse-traded to get a budget deal. Using the
link below, it takes about a minute to send a letter to your congressional
representatives. I'd greatly appreciate the support, particularly from you
non-political scientists, as would many others.

Thanks much,
dgwebster

PS for those of you who aren't familiar with what NSF funds in political
science, here's a quote from Rep. Flake of Arizona as he demanded that no
NSF funds would go to political science in last year's appropriations bill:

“So what kind of research is NSF charging to our credit card? $700,000 to
develop a new model for international climate change analysis; $600,000 to
try to figure out if policymakers actually do what citizens want them to
do. Let me say that again: $600,000 here spent trying to figure out if
policymakers actually do what citizens want them to do. I think we can
answer that question in about 5 minutes when we vote on this amendment
because I can tell you, people out there want us to quit funding projects
like this. $301,000 to study gender and political ambition among high
school and college students; $200,000 to study to determine why political
candidates make vague statements. $200,000 to study why political
candidates make vague statements. That's what we're paying for here."

Dear Colleague,

Time is of the essence, and again I encourage you to contact your
senators<http://APSA.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT0yMjA0ODM5JnA9MSZ1PTc3NTE3OTMzNiZsaT0xMTA2ODIxMg/index.html>to
express your views on the effort to eliminate federal funding of
political science. To facilitate your communication, we provide a direct
portal<http://APSA.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT0yMjA0ODM5JnA9MSZ1PTc3NTE3OTMzNiZsaT0xMTA2ODIxMg/index.html>to
your senators with sample language that you can modify to create your

Please contact your senators as soon as possible!

As you know, the political science program at the National Science
Foundation (NSF) is under imminent threat. At* 2pm EST TODAY*, the Senate
will reconvene to resume consideration of amendments to H.R. 933. Senator
Coburn’s amendment (SA 65) to eliminate NSF funding for political science
research is expected to be among those considered.

Please forward this

your colleagues, to your students, and to other concerned individuals,
as you deem appropriate. Additionally, we ask that you pass this
information on to your campus government relations office, which is well
situated to persuade Congress to oppose any efforts to eliminate political
science funding at NSF.

APSA is working closely with the Consortium on Social Science Association (
COSSA<http://APSA.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT0yMjA0ODM5JnA9MSZ1PTc3NTE3OTMzNiZsaT0xMTA2ODIxNA/index.html>)
to pressure the Senate to oppose the Coburn amendment. On Friday, President
Mansbridge and I sent a letter to all
Senators<http://APSA.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT0yMjA0ODM5JnA9MSZ1PTc3NTE3OTMzNiZsaT0xMTA2ODIxNQ/index.html>urging
support for the political science program at NSF, and protection of
the integrity and independence of NSF. We distributed this letter by press
release, as well. Additionally, specific senators identified as critical to
preserving political science funding have been targeted for direct
communication from APSA’s national office and through department chairs.
All department chairs have been contacted for their assistance in reaching
faculty, campus government relations office and administrators, and others
who will contribute to our effort.

As always, we will keep you updated on the Senate’s activities through the APSA
