Hello all,
In early October, countries will gather for the Diplomatic Conference to
adopt the new Minamata Convention on Mercury -- the first stand-alone UN
global environmental treaty since 2001 and the Stockholm Convention (not
counting protocols to the biodiversity convention or climate accords).
Many of us will address this agreement in our classes one way or other.
For those of you who are looking for a quick convention summary as a way
to put together a few lecture notes, I recently published a short "Issue
in Brief" that you may find helpful: http://www.bu.edu/pardee/iib-28/
In the lead-up to the event starting on October 7th with a preparatory
meeting, there will also be some assorted news coverage. I believe
/Science/ will run some general news and research pieces, and I'm
guessing other major journals and media outlets will too. Some of this
may also work in class, so just a heads-up to keep an eye out for that
stuff, if you think it may be of some interest and/or use. There is
also, of course, always ENB reporting!
More medium-term, /Global Environmental Politics/ will publish an
article on the convention negotiations in their first issue of 2014
(February). Pia Kohler (Williams College) and I are also co-chairing an
ISA panel next year with lots of interesting people who will be looking
at the Minamata Convention and/or the mercury issue from different
perspectives.
