Thank you for the replies to my question about Whaling videos. The responses
are listed below. I ended up using the Discovery Channel Blood and Water in my
class yesterday and it was great. It's a bit odd to navigate at first because
it's supposed to be interactive, so it's about a 20 minute video broken into
parts, but the students really got a lot out of it and it started a good
discussion as a prelude to my lecture about the IWC.

Thanks!
Shannon

The Cove is an activist-social movement focused documentary on dolphin culling,
but it features the IWC quite a bit

I teach a global environmental politics course, and I found this documentary on
YouTube that has some great footage:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEmltHxvz94. It's in twelve parts, so you have
to click through. It's called "A Greener Shade of Whale" (which is beyond
terrible as a title) and I've never been able to get a physical copy. I often
show the 7th and 8th segments, where they discuss the changing composition of
the IWC and interview some of the key delegates. The interviews with the
Canadians and Icelandic representatives are particularly useful, I find.

Discovery Channel has just recently put up quite a nice interactive
'webumentary' which does give a broader historical perspective:

I did find a great Ted Talk (15 minutes) about the state of marine life by a
National Geographic underwater photographer that I thought I'd share - hits the
highlights of overfishing, climate change etc...

Subject: Whaling video

Dear Gep-ed,

I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion for a short video about whaling to
show in class. Most of the ones I've found have been activist footage, but I
was wondering if there was something out there that included more of the
background of the IWC as well. I did a search but I didn't come up with much.

As always I'll compile the responses off list and send them to the group.

All the best,
Shannon
