Dear Colleagues, I'm writing with a question about experiences in hiring processes for a targeted position that might be located in one of several disciplinary departments. That is, a position where "X" is identified as a university priority, and a search to hire someone with expertise in "X" who -- depending upon successful candidates' background -- might be located in one of several disciplines: either (for example) political science, sociology, or history.
Have you served on a committee engaged in such a hire? Do you have other insight or experience about the things that can help ensure the success (or not) of such a search? I see this as a rather different process than hiring a candidate for an interdisciplinary program (something I have more experience with) and so would appreciate any and all help in thinking through this. I welcome feedback off-list and promise to then compile and share. All the best, John PS: FWIW, this particular position is not environmentally-focused. -- John M.
