Dear ISA-ESS Members and other GEP-ED members:

We write to invite proposals for additional GEP review essays for inclusion in
the 2015 and 2016 updates of International Studies Association's Compendium
Project.

As you may know, the ISA Compendium project is a collection of refereed,
original essays that review the literature on important topics of international
relations. The project is published in three parts (1): International Studies
Encyclopedia, which came out in print in 2010; (2) Guides to International
Studies, topical collections of review essays suitable for personal libraries
and course use (two have been published so far); and (3) International Studies
Online - which is expanded and updated annually and about which we write today.

International Studies Online contains all the essays from the original print
edition as well as many new or updated essays. Many universities and colleges
subscribe to International Studies Online, and all ISA members enjoy free
access. If your library does not subscribe to International Studies Online,
please encourage your librarian to purchase it and its updates. It is a great
resource <http://www.isanet.org/Publications/Compendium>.

Each essay in International Studies Online outlines the development of
scholarly thinking on a given issue, status of the current literature, and
possible future directions for research. Compendium essays are of significant
use to students, scholars, and professionals. The Environmental Studies
section of the Compendium already includes eighteen essays (several of which
are currently being updated by their original authors) but we seek to increase
this number. Thus, we write today to invite proposals to write a review essay
for the Compendium for the 2015 or 2016 update on one of the following subjects:

* China and International Environmental Politics

  * Developing Countries and International Environmental Politics
  * Domestic/International Nexus in Environmental Politics
  * European Union and International Environmental Politics
  * International Cooperation on Biodiversity and Endangered Species
  * International Cooperation on Mercury and other Heavy Metals (co-author
needed to work with an existing author)
  * International Cooperation on Stratospheric Ozone Depletion (co-author
needed to work with an existing author)

* International Cooperation on Transboundary Air Pollution

  * International Environmental Regimes and IGOs
  * The International Politics of Energy
  * Intergovernmental Organizations and International Environmental Politics
  * Non-Governmental Organizations and International Environmental Politics
  * Science, Knowledge, and Environmental Politics
  *   Trade and the Environment
  * A subject in GEP that you propose.

Essays in the International Studies Online Compendium chart the development of
scholarly thinking and analysis on a given issue, the status of the current
literature, and possible future directions for research. Thus, the essays are
neutral literature reviews and not new research reports that contribute to
scholarship by integrating and synthesizing the literature and putting it in
historical context (not from arguing on behalf of a particular position or
offering new empirical evidence). The targeted audience is someone who wants a
quick but substantive overview of the scholarly literature and its evolution on
that particular topic. Most essays are about 10,000 words long but this is
somewhat flexible. All essays go through a peer review process.

The Compendium works a bit differently from other ISA publications. Unlike
journal articles (you submit whatever article you wish), Compendium essays are
assigned after a scholar volunteers or is invited to write and the author is
asked to submit the essay by a set deadline: 1 June 2015 for the 2015 release
and 1 June 2016, for the 2016 release (or ideally within 5 months of agreeing
to do the essay for 2016).

Once submitted, the essay goes out for blind peer review. Co-authors are
allowed. Indeed, recent PhD and advanced graduate students working can make
excellent co-authors given their often detailed knowledge of particular
literatures. As we have told other potential authors, the lead editor of the
overall ISA Compendium project, Professor Renee Marlin-Bennett, will be happy
to provide a letter for use in job applications or rank and tenure review
regarding the nature of the publication, the fact that it's refereed, that it
is an official publication of the International Studies Association, that all
ISA members have access to the ISA Compendium and many use it and have cited
it, and that ISA considers it an important scholarly enterprise and publication
We hope you will consider writing a review essay. If you are interested in one
of the topics, please send us a short note explaining your familiarity with the
topic and a copy of your vita.

Sincerely,

David Downie ([email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>)
