The School of Government and Public Policy at the University of Strathclyde
invites applications for a fully funded PhD position to study the role of the
European Union in international climate change negotiations. The ideal
candidate will have a Masters degree in political science and/or international
relations, at least a foundation in quantitative methods, and an affinity with
the topic. The quality of applicants’ academic record will be more important
than relevant subject area knowledge during the selection process; an affinity
with the topic is all that is required. The student will be offered a
supportive environment to develop his or her academic career including training
in relevant research methods and transferable skills, opportunities to gain
teaching experience, and access to an international research network of
established academics and policymakers. The student will be supervised by
Professor Robert Thomson and Dr. Jun Koga at the University of Strathclyde and
will involve collaboration with professors at New York University, the
University of Groningen in the Netherlands, the Potsdam Institute for Climate
Change Research (PIK), the University of Potsdam in Germany, and senior
policymakers in the European Commission. The School of Government and Public
Policy was ranked 1st in Scotland and 6th in the UK for research intensity in
the last national assessment exercise (Research Excellence Framework 2014).

Details
The studentship will cover EU fees and a full stipend (at the standard Research
Council UK rate) for three years. Non-EU students can apply by demonstrating
that they have sufficient additional funds to cover the difference between EU
and non-EU fees.
