EFFECTIVE DATE: Fall Semester, 2016

The Environmental Studies Program at California State University San Marcos
invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Associate or Assistant
Professor level, with a specialization in Environmental Justice to begin August
2016. The Environmental Studies Program in the College of Humanities, Arts,
Behavioral and Social Sciences at CSU San Marcos is an interdisciplinary
collaboration offering a B.A. level degree with curricula in the physical and
life sciences, social sciences, GIS, environmental policy and law, and arts and
humanities. The multidisciplinary nature of the degree provides a collaborative
setting for faculty, students, and community partners to study and learn. We
are interested in candidates who specialize in environmental justice and one or
more of the following areas: social stratification, environmental social
movements, the intersection of class, race, gender, and the environment,
inequality, international development, and/or globalization.

Minimum requirements for the position include: The successful candidate must
have earned a Ph.D. prior to date of appointment, and will possess evidence of
an established quality research program and an ability to develop new course
offerings in environmental studies. Successful candidates will also demonstrate
a commitment to undergraduate teaching and will provide evidence of effective
teaching at the university level (such as course evaluations, peer
observations, etc.).

Preferred requirements for the position include: The committee is particularly
interested in an Associate Professor or Advanced Assistant Professor.
Candidates for appointment at the Associate rank must have a demonstrated
record of scholarly and teaching achievement and service appropriate for the
rank. The academic discipline of the faculty member is open within the
social/behavioral sciences and humanities, although preferences include:
anthropology, geography, gender/ethnic/race studies, history, philosophy,
political science, or sociology. Preference will be given to applicants with
demonstrated intercultural competence with diverse groups in teaching, research
and/or service. We are particularly interested in applicants whose research
areas complement and expand upon our current tenure-track faculty offerings, as
well as those whose work will take advantage of our ethnically diverse region.
We especially welcome applicants with interdisciplinary interests and
experiences.

Duties: The successful candidate will teach core courses within the
Environmental Studies major as well as developing additional upper division
elective courses within their own area of expertise, pursue an active scholarly
agenda, advise and mentor Environmental Studies majors, and participate in
activities serving the program, college, university, and community. The
successful candidate will work with an interdisciplinary steering committee to
continue to build an established, rapidly growing major. The typical teaching
load is three courses per semester.
