Visiting Assistant Professor - (R2152)

The Bates College Environmental Studies Program invites applications for a three-year Visiting Assistant Professor focused on the environmental dimensions of urban systems. Candidates with scholarly emphases on small cities or rural-urban dynamics, especially as related to food systems, energy, shelter, design, cultural diversity, or community development in urban environments, are particularly encouraged to apply. Specific research fields for this position are open, and may include urban ecology, urban sustainability studies, urban sociology, environmental policy and planning, urban geography, political ecology, urban anthropology, urban design, architecture and the built environment, or related fields. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to engaging people from backgrounds underrepresented in academia—particularly racial and ethnic minorities, first-generation-to-college, and lower socioeconomic classes—and a demonstrated interest in teaching and learning about how environmental issues touch diverse populations. Scholarly achievement, a forward-looking research agenda, and a desire to teach at a liberal arts institution are also required. Responsibilities include leading a junior-senior course in community-engaged research and an array of other courses at a range of levels related to the candidate’s field of expertise. The teaching load is five courses per academic year, distributed across two 12-week semesters and one 5-week spring term, and senior thesis advising. Appointment would begin August 2017, and a PhD or other terminal degree by the time of appointment is required.

Bates College is committed to enhancing the diversity of the campus and the curriculum. We welcome applications from all individuals with the ability to contribute to the college’s continuing commitment to social and cultural diversity, inclusiveness, and the transformative power of our differences. The search committee expects applicants to identify their strengths and experiences in these areas and describe how their research, teaching, or outreach can further this goal.

Review of applications begins on October 17, 2016, and will continue until the position is filled.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a teaching statement that includes a list of courses you have taught or are qualified to teach, a research statement accessible to a search committee with a broad range of scholarly expertise, a description of experience and interest in advancing the goals of diversity and inclusion described above. Please also arrange for the submission of graduate and undergraduate transcripts and three letters of recommendation.
