Dear chemicals-l readers,

The intersessional process on the future of global chemicals and waste
management is starting today in Brasilia. But what do stakeholders think about
the future governance landscape on hazardous substances? In a project
contracted by the German Environment Agency with funding from the German
Ministry for the Environment, we conducted a series of 38 interviews with
stakeholders engaged in the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals
Management (SAICM). A report on the outcomes of these interviews is now online
at https://www.adelphi.de/en/publication/stakeholder-views-saicm-beyond-2020

The results show almost universal approval of the voluntary, multi-stakeholder
and multi-sectoral nature of SAICM. They highlight the need for further efforts
to enhance implementation of the Strategic Approach, to increase participation
of key sectors and stakeholders, and to prioritise action. The findings
suggest a clear demand for enhancing SAICM based on its current strengths, and
they reveal considerable room to manoeuvre through the intersessional process.

Furthermore, we launched an information website on the beyond 2020 process. In
the current beta version it already contains a number of key publications,
highlights some upcoming events and aims at becoming a source of information on
the future governance of chemicals and waste. You can find it at
https://chemicalsbeyond2020.adelphi.de

We are seeking to extend and expand the website over the coming months. If you
would like to get engaged or want to see some relevant information included,
please let me know.

Last but not least, our affiliate and senior adviser Paul Hohnen just published
a very concise article on "the pressing need for global chemicals governance"
at Innovation Forum, making a strong argument for enhancing the institutional
basis to deal with hazardous substances. He writes: "Chemicals will be
essential to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda and the majority of its
sustainable development goals. The SDGs, however, will not be reached unless we
have both a new and improved framework for the sound management of chemicals
and waste and parallel work to mainstream sustainable chemistry." You can find
the article at

With best regards,
Nils Simon
