I serve on this board (Tom Dietz and Gene Rosa did before me from
Sociology), so let me know if you have any questions. And please forward if
you have good people in mind. A really useful attribute is knowledge of
federal environmental agencies and international agencies and foundations
that might fund studies by the Academy on key environmental issues.
Thanks. Timmons

*CALL FOR NOMINATIONS:*

*Board Members for the Board on Environmental Change and Society*

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is seeking
nominations for individuals to serve on the Board on Environmental Change
and Society (BECS). The Board provides a forum to examine and advance the
social and natural sciences at the intersection of human activity and
global environmental change.

Board members meet semi-annually in person and interact frequently in
smaller ad hoc groups through conference calls, webinars, and other
electronic means to provide oversight to scientific consensus studies,
roundtables and symposium around a number of critical concerns for policy,
including research, planning and decision-making.

*BECS needs for expertise*

BECS members come from many disciplines of the social and natural sciences
and focus on interdisciplinary research on topics crucial to understanding
human-environment interactions. Rather than listing traditional academic
disciplines, we list below interdisciplinary expertise that the Board seeks
to incorporate. Nominations for membership are welcome in all of the
following areas, and others that are also relevant but not included here
(such as individuals at the local, state, federal level):

*Drivers*

BECS is working to improve understanding of how human-environment
interactions affect rates of social and environmental change and seeks
researchers with expertise in:

· Demographic change

· Economic development pathways at regional scales

· Integrated assessment modeling

*Adaptive management*

BECS seeks to improve application of all branches of science in adaptive
management of natural and human-induced environmental change and needs
members who focus on:

· Risk framing, perception, and communication

· Vulnerability assessment methods

· Tailoring climate observations and projections for users

· Methods for evaluating adaptation effectiveness

· Environmental law and justice

· Links between environmental change, social stress, and security

*Transformative change*

BECS evaluates and advances research on accelerating innovation and
diffusion of promising technologies that address societal and environmental
aspects of sustainability and well being, and needs members with experience
in:

· Factors affecting uptake of technologies

· Energy efficiency

· Management of carbon in the environment

· Employment and economic effects of energy infrastructure decisions

· Governance of commons resources

*Methods for integration of social and natural sciences*

BECS works to advance the science of human-environment interactions and
requires expertise in:

· Use of science in decision making

· Valuation of environmental outcomes and strategies, integrating
social and natural science methods

· Data integration from geophysical, ecological, and socioeconomic
observation networks and sources

· Risk framing, perception, and communication

· Scenarios and scenario planning

Members typically serve 3-year terms with an option to reappoint after the
first term. Nominations are sought for 2017 and 2018 with the first
rotation in membership starting in early summer 2017.

To submit a nomination, please send your nominations by email to:
[email protected]

*Deadline for nominations is March 1st.*
