Dear GEP-EDers, Dear AK-Umwelt the Central European University needs all of our help. If you haven’t already sent a letter in support, consider doing so now. It is possibly the last chance.
From: Diana Urge-Vorsatz <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> Date: Sunday, April 9, 2017 at 8:10 PMDear colleagues I hope you do not mind me contacting you regarding the Central European University; I promise this will be the last. Since you last hear from Richard about it, there has been a landslide support to academic freedong in Hungary from all over the world for which we are extremely grateful: 16 Nobel Laurates, 23 Presidents of top universities, EU Commissioners, the President of Germany, and many other dignitaries, world leaders and institutions have pledged strong support to CEU (see more at www.ceu.org<http://www.ceu.org> or https://www.ceu.edu/istandwithCEU/support-statements). Unfortunately the law was passed, through an expedited procedure bypassing consultation phases, last Tuesday (less than a week after the first announcement about such plans). Our last hope is that the President refuses to sign it into law; he has until Monday to decide on this. Today there were massive protests in Budapest, at least 80,000 people, see, e.g. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-39549120, but also the attached picture taken by a friend (I could not even get into the large square due to the crowd). Still, many project that the President will sign the bill tomorrow. We know that foreign pressure has already been significantly larger than expected; as a result, two of our Ambassadors have been recalled last week - including our US one. Please consider writing a letter to President Ader not to sign the bill into law (resources: https://www.ceu.edu/node/17842), or other means to support the university, if you agree with this cause. Other things you could consider doing are listed on https://www.ceu.edu/category/istandwithceu If you already have, we are immensely thankful and you can rest assured that you are in good company - in terms of the other signatories (see the first link above) and supporters.
