Political science

Main responsibilities
The position entails primarily teaching on the undergraduate and Master level 
in Political Science. In addition, the position includes one´s own research, 
comprising 50 percent of full-time. Teaching at the department is conducted 
both in Swedish and in English. The holder of the position is expected to 
contribute to strengthening research at the department through research 
publications and actively seeking external research funding, as well as to 
participate in the department’s internal work, including overall administrative 
tasks.

Qualification requirements
Qualified to be employed as an Associate Senior Lecturer in political science, 
is a person who has been awarded a PhD in political science, or has the 
corresponding scientific competence. Relevant candidates should have completed 
their PhD, or gained the corresponding experience, within the past seven years. 
Teaching proficiency should be demonstrated through teaching experience in 
first and/or second cycle education. The teaching expertise is to be 
well-documented in a manner which makes it possible to assess the quality of 
the teaching activities. The applicant must have the ability to cooperate as 
well as the ability and suitability otherwise needed to perform the duties well.

Assessment criteria
Special emphasis will be paid to scientific proficiency demonstrated through 
independent research.

Strong emphasis will be paid to teaching proficiency demonstrated through 
independent teaching on first and second cycle education.

Strong emphasis will be paid to a well-developed plan for research during the 
period of employment.

Strong emphasis will also be paid to a documented ability to cooperate well 
with colleagues and fellow researchers.

Emphasis will also be paid to successfully having applied for and received 
research funds for projects from external research funding bodies.

Emphasis will also be paid to administrative proficiency and the ability to 
collaborate with the surrounding society and to inform about the work of 
research and development.

Teaching and learning in higher education
It is a merit to have completed at least 7.5 higher education credits of higher 
education in teaching theory or have otherwise acquired the equivalent 
knowledge.

Additional information
An applicant who does not have at least 7.5 higher education credits of higher 
education in teaching theory and has not been assessed as otherwise having the 
corresponding knowledge must undergo such courses during the first two years of 
employment.

Understanding Swedish is not a requirement at the time of employment. The 
applicant should, however, be prepared within two years, to carry out teaching 
and administration tasks that require knowledge and usage of the Swedish 
language.

Information about promotion to Senior Lecturer
The Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100) states that an employment as 
Associate Senior Lecturer is limited to four years. The purpose of the 
employment is to provide the lecturer with opportunity to further develop 
his/her role as an independent researcher and gain important merits required 
for other teaching positions with more advanced qualification requirements.

If an Associate Senior Lecturer at Stockholm University qualifies for a 
promotion and applies, he/she should be offered a permanent position as a 
Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the Rules 
of Employment for the Recruitment and Employment of Teachers (AOSU). The 
candidate must also be assessed according to the Assessment criteria below:

Assessment criteria for promotion from Associate Senior Lecturer to Senior 
Lecturer
Qualified to be promoted to Senior Lecturer is a person who has been awarded a 
PhD in political science, or has the corresponding scientific competence and 
has demonstrated scientific proficiency by planning and executing research 
during the course of employment representing at least 50 per cent of the 
requirements of an associate professorship (excluding the thesis work), in 
terms of quantity, quality and independence, regardless of how far along the 
research was at the time of employment.

Teaching proficiency should be demonstrated through teaching in both first and 
second cycle education. Teaching should be independently planned and carried 
out and the quality and quantity should represent the requirements of an 
employment as Senior Lecturer. Teaching proficiency should be documented in a 
manner which makes it possible to assess its quality.

The applicant must have the ability to cooperate as well as the ability and 
suitability otherwise needed to perform the duties well.

The applicant should have a documented ability to initiate and conduct 
independent research of high scientific quality.

The applicant should have completed at least 7.5 higher education credits of 
higher education in teaching theory or have otherwise acquired the equivalent 
knowledge.

In the event of a discrepancy between the Swedish original vacancy and the 
English translation, the Swedish version takes precedence.
