Hello GEP-ers,

I have gone down a research rabbit hole and I hope you can help me out.

I am looking for articles and information about how universities create new
degrees, especially focused on the environment. What is the decision-making
process between creating an MEM versus an MS in Environmental Management?
Versus and MBA in Sustainability or a Masters in Environmental Studies or a
Masters in Natural Resources Management?

Are there accrediting agencies that need to be considered when creating these?
(To give a parallel case, my school just created a new Masters in International
Affairs, following guidelines from APSIA, which accredits MIA programs. But
this is different from a masters in international relations.) What is the
equivalent line in environmental masters?

Or do the schools just get accredited as a whole and then decide which degrees
they want to offer?

I am starting a research project on masters programs that focus on the
environment, and thought that only looking at MEM programs would mean I would
have comparable programs, but it seems they are all different and some MEM
programs look a lot like MSc or MES programs. I thought there were divisions
between an MS (more research and science) and MEM (more management and applied)
but am not so sure anymore, especially with all these other environmentally
focused degrees in the field.

If you have any leads or thoughts on this, please email me at
[email protected] and I will compile information for anyone else
who is interested.

Any advice or leads would be appreciated! Even tidbits on how your school might
have followed a certain process/criteria in creating their new degree might
help me piece it together.

With gratitude,

Cristina
