Position Summary
The Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, located in Indi=
anapolis, Indiana seeks a colleague to join the more than twenty core facul=
ty and more than fifty affiliate and adjunct faculty who research, teach, a=
nd train on all aspects related to philanthropy. This is an open rank and o=
pen discipline, tenure-line search. Applicants should conduct research and =
teach at the intersections of philanthropy and environmental resilience, wi=
th potential connections to environmental policy, social and environmental =
justice, environmental sustainability, and climate change adaptation. Disci=
plines might include (but are not limited to) earth sciences, economics, et=
hics, history, management, psychology, and/or sociology. This position is o=
ne of several new faculty lines created as part of Indiana University=E2=80=
=99s Grand Challenges, Prepared for Environmental Change. (Please refer to =

Recognizing this is an emerging interdisciplinary topic, all candidates wil=
l be considered regardless of past record of accomplishment in environmenta=
l philanthropy, but will show interest and promise of future excellence in =
helping to advance the understanding and practice of this field. A candidat=
e who meets the requirements for an Indiana University titled professorship=
will have the title of McKinney Professor of Environmental Resilience. Suc=
h candidates may have advanced rank and will have a substantive research po=
rtfolio. Candidates who are promising but not yet at that level will have t=
he title of McKinney Fellow of Environmental Resilience and Philanthropy an=
d Assistant or Associate Professor of Philanthropic Studies. The incumbent =
will conduct research and facilitate the translation of new knowledge into =
improved practice; create a thriving intellectual community to attract outs=
tanding students to research and research-informed practice. The preferred =
candidate will have an outstanding research record in the field of philanth=
ropy; a proven record of accomplishment of supervising and providing mentor=
ship to students from all backgrounds (including first-generation college s=
tudents, low-income students; racial and ethnic minorities, women, nontradi=
tional, LGBTQ, etc.) and/or curriculum development in the environment.
The search for this position begins in March 2019. To ensure full considera=
tion, application materials must be received by September 1, 2019, but it w=
ill remain open until filled. We ask that interested candidates express the=
ir interest even if they are not submitting their entire package until late=

tion of this posting). This position is a ten-month open rank tenured or te=
nure-track faculty position. Candidates should have a significant record in=
the areas of research on philanthropy and the environment, preferably in o=
ne of the areas listed above, though relevant research with broad impact is=
highly valued. The incumbent can be a senior professor with an established=
record in philanthropy or an emerging scholar with a promising research ag=
enda. Regardless of the rank, the faculty of the school will look for an ex=
cellent scholar who will thrive in our collegial community, engage in build=
ing the field of philanthropic studies, and demonstrate an interest in enga=
ging current and future scholars and practitioners.
Located on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis =
(IUPUI), the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy builds on the strength of =
thirty years of research, training and outreach activity. Collaborating clo=
sely with the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs and the IU Scho=
ol of Liberal Arts, among others, the Lilly Family School=E2=80=99s faculty=
members draw on an expansive and collegial community of scholars and pract=
itioners from a multiplicity of disciplines devoted to the serious study of=
philanthropy. Degree programs include the Ph.D., M.A., and B.A. degrees in=
Philanthropic Studies. The School hosts ten endowed chairs in various area=
s of philanthropy and a robust executive education arm through The Fund Rai=
sing School, the Women=E2=80=99s Philanthropy Institute, the Lake Institute=
on Faith and Giving, and the Mays Family Institute on Diverse Philanthropy=
. The School=E2=80=99s Research Department is known for researching Giving =
USA, the Philanthropy Panel Study, and the Global Philanthropy Indices, amo=
ng many other projects.
The duties of the McKinney Professor of Environmental Resilience and Philan=
thropy will include teaching and mentoring students, as well as conducting =
research, publishing, and providing service to the School, campus, and the =
field of Philanthropic Studies. The school has a preference for teaching of=
required and elective philanthropy courses and expanding the research agen=
da generally, but ideally in one of the areas above. In addition, the facul=
ty member hired will have an opportunity to work with faculty and staff acr=
oss the university through the IU Environmental Resilience Institute on pro=
jects of mutual interest. The faculty member might also work with local, re=
gional, and/or national/international charities in the environmental space.=
These collaborations will be voluntary and mutually beneficial.
With a concentration in the health sciences, IUPUI confers more professiona=
l degrees than any other campus in Indiana and is one of the state=E2=80=99=
s two leading institutions for externally funded research. Valuing candidat=
es who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a=
demonstrated commitment to improving the conditions in higher education fo=
r under-represented students, the School encourages candidates from under-r=

A Ph.D. is required but the disciplinary field is open and may be in any of=

Indiana University titled professorship will have the title of McKinney Pro=
fessor of Environmental Resilience. Such candidates may have advanced rank =
and will have a substantive research
portfolio. Candidates who are promising but not yet at that level will hav=
e the title of McKinney Fellow of Environmental Resilience and Philanthropy=
and Assistant or Associate Professor of Philanthropic Studies. The incumbe=
nt will conduct research and facilitate
the translation of new knowledge into improved practice; create a thriving=
intellectual community to attract outstanding students to research and res=
earch-informed practice. The preferred candidate will have an outstanding r=
esearch record in the field of philanthropy;
a proven record of accomplishment of supervising and providing mentorship =
to students from all backgrounds (including first-generation college studen=
ts, low-income students; racial and ethnic minorities, women, nontraditiona=
l, <span class=3D"caps">LGBTQ</span>,
etc.) and/or curriculum development in the environment.</p>

<p>The search for this position begins in March 2019. To ensure full consid=

record in the areas of research on philanthropy and the environment, prefe=
rably in one of the areas listed above, though relevant research with broad=
impact is highly valued. The incumbent can be a senior professor with an e=
stablished record in philanthropy
or an emerging scholar with a promising research agenda. Regardless of the=
rank, the faculty of the school will look for an excellent scholar who wil=
l thrive in our collegial community, engage in building the field of philan=
thropic studies, and demonstrate
an interest in engaging current and future scholars and practitioners.</p>

<p>Located on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapol=
is (<span class=3D"caps">IUPUI</span>), the Lilly Family School of Philanth=
ropy builds on the strength of thirty years of research, training and outre=
ach activity. Collaborating closely
with the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs and the IU School o=
f Liberal Arts, among others, the Lilly Family School=E2=80=99s faculty mem=
bers draw on an expansive and collegial community of scholars and practitio=
ners from a multiplicity of disciplines
devoted to the serious study of philanthropy. Degree programs include the =
Ph.D., M.A., and B.A. degrees in Philanthropic Studies. The School hosts te=
n endowed chairs in various areas of philanthropy and a robust executive ed=
ucation arm through The Fund Raising
School, the Women=E2=80=99s Philanthropy Institute, the Lake Institute on =
Faith and Giving, and the Mays Family Institute on Diverse Philanthropy. Th=
e School=E2=80=99s Research Department is known for researching Giving =
;<span class=3D"caps">USA</span>, the Philanthropy Panel
Study, and the Global Philanthropy Indices, among many other projects.</p>

<p>The duties of the McKinney Professor of Environmental Resilience and Phi=
lanthropy will include teaching and mentoring students, as well as conducti=
ng research, publishing, and providing service to the School, campus, and t=
he field of Philanthropic Studies.
The school has a preference for teaching of required and elective philanth=
ropy courses and expanding the research agenda generally, but ideally in on=
e of the areas above. In addition, the faculty member hired will have an op=
portunity to work with faculty and
staff across the university through the IU Environmental Resilience Instit=
ute on projects of mutual interest. The faculty member might also work with=
local, regional, and/or national/international charities in the environmen=
tal space. These collaborations
will be voluntary and mutually beneficial.</p>
