Postdoctoral Researcher - Low Carbon Transitions of Energy Systems

The Environmental Studies Program at the University of California, Santa
Barbara invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher, with an anticipated
start date of February 1, 2020 or soon thereafter. The Program is looking for
individuals with particular emphasis in the area of Low Carbon Transitions of
Energy Systems.

The Clean Energy Transformation Lab (CETlab) at the University of California,
Santa Barbara is part of the Environmental Studies Program. Ongoing CETlab
projects are focused on understanding and supporting clean energy transitions
in California, India, and Sub-saharan Africa through modeling and development
of decision-support tools. Lab projects include the Multi-criteria Analysis for
Planning Renewable Energy (MapRE) initiative, a spatial analysis platform for
planning renewable energy deployment, and GridPath, an electricity system
planning and operations analysis platform.

The ideal candidate will lead at least two related research tracks modeling
low-carbon electricity systems: the first track examines a specific component
of an existing project integrating climate change considerations in low-carbon
power sector planning for Southern Africa; the second track offers flexibility
in designing a new project that contributes to the development and application
of the GridPath capacity expansion and production cost modeling platform. The
ideal candidate will be expected to lead or contribute to peer-reviewed
publications, give oral presentations, and develop policy briefs and reports to
funders and agencies. The ideal candidate will work closely with Dr. Ranjit
Deshmukh as well as CETlab graduate students, postdocs, and lab collaborators.

At a minimum, applicants must hold a PhD in engineering, interdisciplinary
energy studies, or a related field at the time of application. Preferred
qualifications for the ideal candidate include having domain knowledge in
energy studies, power systems, renewable energy grid integration, and
optimization models. Preferred qualifications also include extensive experience
with managing, processing, and analyzing large datasets and strong programming
skills especially in Python, Pyomo, and SQL. An interest in and track record of
publishing in top academic journals is preferred. Experience in hydrological
modeling is preferred. It is preferred that the ideal candidate should also
have strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships with
academic, NGO and government partners, and to work effectively as part of a
highly collaborative research team. Strong scientific writing and presentation
skills are essential and preferred. Start date is negotiable, but ideally would
be after February 1, 2020 or soon thereafter. The duration of the initial
appointment is 12 months, with reappointment for another 12 months based on
performance and availability of funding. The Department is especially
interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of
the academic community through research, teaching, and service as appropriate
to the position.

Applications should be submitted electronically, and must include:
• Cover letter
• Curriculum vitae

excellence can only be fully realized by faculty, students, and staff who share
our commitment to these values. The Program encourages all applicants to submit
a Statement of Contributions to Diversity addressing past and/or potential
contributions to diversity through research. These statements, if submitted,
will be reviewed for evidence of research, professional and/or public service
contributions that promote diversity and equal opportunity, such as effective
strategies used for the educational advancement of students in various
under-represented groups; demonstrated contributions to the advancement of
equitable access and diversity in research; and contributions furthering
diversity and equal opportunity in higher education through participation in
such activities as recruitment, retention, and mentoring of scholars and
students.

Applications received by January 29, 2020 will be given priority consideration,
but the position will remain open until filled.
