SOMO is currently looking for a researcher who will lead our research on supply
chains passing through China, with a focus on the garment and electronics
sectors.

About SOMO

SOMO investigates multinationals. Independent, factual, critical and with a
clear goal: a fair and sustainable world, in which public interests outweigh
corporate interests. We conduct action-oriented research to expose the impact
and unprecedented power of multinationals, to promote fundamental changes in
our economic system, and to stop and reverse the harms done by multinationals.
Cooperating with hundreds of organisations around the world, we ensure that our
information arrives where it has the most impact: communities, courtrooms,
civil society organisations, media, politicians and more.

In recent years, SOMO has grown from a small-scale organisation to a non-profit
organisation with about 35 passionate employees, who work to contribute to a
fair, just and sustainable world. The majority of SOMO’s staff work from our
Amsterdam office, and collaborate with partners across all regions of the world.

The work culture at SOMO can be described as open, democratic and informal.
Employees are involved, passionate, and focused on collaboration. People are
ambitious, critical, with a drive to contributing to a fair and just world.

Structure

SOMO is organised in five programmatic teams and a communications team. These
teams are managed by the Management Team (MT). Within each programme, employees
conduct research into areas such as economic systems, sustainable supply
chains, harmful business strategies, and natural resources. The MT consists of
the Research and Advice Manager, the Operations Manager, and the Executive
Director. SOMO hosts and participates in several national and international NGO
networks.

The role of Researcher on China and International Supply Chains is a new role,
established to lead a major new project at SOMO. The role sits in our
Sustainable Supply Chains team.

Job description and purpose

The Researcher on China and International Supply Chains will lead SOMO’s major
research programme on this issue. Working with skilled colleagues you will
develop innovative research and communication approaches on supply chains,
constructing investigations and outputs designed to bring about changes that
benefit workers’ rights.

You must be comfortable using data programmes and data visualisation tools and
be willing to think outside the box when it comes to investigative
methodologies.

You will work with a strong group of colleagues who will provide support, and
with strong partners. Good team work is essential, but you will also be
organised and a good self-starter.

Success in the role is defined as cutting-edge research which is impactful, and
strong external-facing engagement in key forums by the post-holder.

Main responsibilities

  * Develop new approaches to investigating supply chains in line with SOMO’s
funded program on workers’ rights in supply chains involving China.
  * Carry our research to reconstruct supply chains linked to abuses of
workers’ rights.
  * Write research reports, blog posts, position papers and social media
content that is focused on achieving the goals of SOMO’s strategy.
  * Develop data visualisation tools as a key output of research (working
with Communications experts at SOMO).
  * Maintain close contacts and regular dialogue with partner organisations
and participate in dialogue forums.
  * Carry our advocacy in Europe aimed at securing legislative or policy
change on supply chain due diligence by companies.

Key skills and experience

  *   A post-graduate qualification in a relevant field.
  * At least five years’ experience working on supply chains, preferable
covering Europe and China.
  * Good knowledge of, and strong commitment to, labour rights.
  * Proven research skills, with a track record of publishing engaging,
well-evidenced, content.
  * Experience working with data tools, large data sets, and/or data
visualization approaches.
  * Good understanding of corporate actors and civil society actors working
on supply chains in Europe and China.
  * Experience in one or both of garments and electronics supply chains is
desirable.
  * Ability to facilitate meetings and discussions.
  * Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with experience
representing an organisation to media, governmental actors and within civil
society spaces.
  * Excellent writing skills in English; competency in Mandarin is an asset.
  * A strong team player able to work with a dynamic team of colleagues
within and outside SOMO.

We offer

  * An exciting and challenging position within a national and international
network.
  * An informal and dynamic work environment with the opportunity to
undertake new initiatives.
  *   A gross monthly salary between € 3,976 and € 5,669 based on 40 hours a
week, depending on experience.
  *   We initially offer a one-year contract of 32 to 36 hours a week (0.8-0.9
fte, but the post is expected to become a permanent post after year 1).
  * Good pension, education possibilities and other benefits also paid.
  * Location: Amsterdam desirable but flexibility for the right candidate.

Interested?

Please send your application (your letter of interest and CV in English, with
two examples of publications you have authored) by e-mail to
[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> before 31 September 2022.

SOMO believes in the power and necessity of a diverse and inclusive
organisation. We are striving for more diversity and better representation of
people with different backgrounds in our team.
