Dear colleagues,
We are announcing three positions (2 4-year PhD positions and 1 2 year postdoc
positions) in the Mistra Biopath project at the Department of Political
Science, Lund University. One Phd is on quantitative modelling of national
biodiversity accounting and decision support. The other PhD is on the political
economy of biodiversity financing and methodologically more open. The postdoc
focusses on governance, actors, and steering instruments.

The Mistra Biopath programme is an interdisciplinary research endeavour that
aims to map, assess, co-develop and test existing and novel approaches for
integration of biodiversity considerations into financial decision-making, and
analyse the institutional and policy implications of potential transition
pathways (see https://www.mistrabiopath.se/).

The positions:

PhD position in Political Science, Biodiversity
Financing/ARIES<https://lu.varbi.com/en/what:job/jobID:571645/>
Deadline: 3rd February 2023
Start date: 1st September 2023

The thesis project shall study the political economy of biodiversity financing,
concretely national accounting standards for ecosystem services and the role of
corresponding support systems for political decision making. Through a semantic
artificial intelligence model builder called ARIES (Artificial Intelligence for
Ecosystem Services), experimental biodiversity accounts will be developed in
collaboration with partners from both public and private sectors. The doctoral
project shall delineate both the potential and limitations of such an
evidence-based support for political decision making for biodiversity
conservation.

PhD position Political Science, Political Economy of Biodiversity
Financing<https://lu.varbi.com/en/what:job/jobID:565031/>
Deadline: 3rd February 2023
Start date: 1st September 2023
The thesis project shall study the political economy of biodiversity financing,
with a particular focus on the role of Swedish public expenditures for
biodiversity conservation and their relation to financial markets. This could
include, for example, mapping current public and private expenditures,
assessing existing finance solutions and financing needs, and devising
solutions to mobilize the required resources. Methodologically, the thesis can
draw on quantitative and qualitative data and inputs from a variety of sectors.

2-year postdoc, political economy of biodiversity
financing<https://lu.varbi.com/en/what:job/jobID:563468/>
Deadline: 31st December
Start date: February 2022 or as agreed

The main responsibility for the postdoctoral fellow is to map and systematize
the governance framework of the financial system in Sweden in relation to
current multilevel governance frameworks to identify trends, gaps, and
potential solutions. The analyses include the landscape of actors, as well as
policy instruments, values, and practices that are driving or hindering the
finance sector to hedge against biodiversity loss and to invest in restoration
of habitats and species. The potential and limitations of purely private
approaches shall be considered and the need to complement and steer with public
policy is to be assessed. From there, the idea is to initiate pilot policy labs
in collaboration with partners from private and public sectors, to explore and
innovate potential solutions.

Thanks for forwarding and sorry for crossposting.

Best
Nils
