Dear GEP colleagues,

Michael Manulak and I are organising a panel for next year’s ISA Annual
Convention in Chicago that brings together scholars working on the historical
dimensions of GEP. The purpose of this panel is to showcase new research on GEP
history and stimulate reflection on the role of historical research in the
future development of GEP as an academic discipline. Please send us an email
(to [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> and
[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>),
ideally by 24th May, if you would like to be included in this panel. Below is
the abstract for this panel proposal:

Panel title: “Global Environmental Politics: Learning from History”
Abstract: This panel explores the role that history and historical research can
and should play in the study of global environmental politics (GEP).
Historically informed scholarship has gained traction in International
Relations in recent years but remains on the margins of the GEP research
agenda. This panel explores why this is the case and what can be done to
stimulate more extensive engagement with the fields of environmental history
and global history. Bringing GEP and history together ought to shed new light
on, inter alia, the historical roots of environmentalism and GEP; how
understandings of global environmental problems have evolved over time; and
what we can learn from past cases of environmental policy-making. This panel
brings together scholars with an interest in the historical dimensions of the
global environment and environmental politics, to explore different uses of
history in the study of GEP.

Best wishes,
Robert
