The Environmental Studies (ES) Department at Colby College invites applications
for a tenure track assistant professor position in environmental policy to
begin Fall 2025. We seek candidates with scholarship and teaching experience in
international environmental policy. We are particularly interested in
candidates with transnational or global perspectives on climate change,
agriculture/food systems, environmental justice, or other areas of
environmental law or policy. Teaching responsibilities will include an
intermediate-level course in international environmental policy, electives in
the candidate’s area of specialty, an introductory environmental studies
course, and a senior capstone course for environmental policy majors.

Candidates should have a Ph.D., be engaged in interdisciplinary environmental
policy scholarship, and have a strong commitment to undergraduate education. A
successful applicant could have a background in any of public policy,
sociology, anthropology, geography, sustainability science, or a related social
science discipline. Candidates who are ABD with an expected completion date
prior to fall 2025 will be considered. The search committee is especially
interested in candidates who, through their research, teaching and/or service,
will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the campus community.

Colby’s Environmental Studies Department is one of the oldest in the country.
The department offers majors in Environmental Policy, Environmental Science,

applied environmental research and advocacy at the local, regional and global
scale. The ES department works closely with Colby institutes including the Buck
Lab for Climate and Environment, the Davis Institute for Artificial
Intelligence, the Goldfarb Center for Public Affairs, and the Oak Institute for
Human Rights. The ES department also collaborates with numerous off-campus
partners, including the Bigelow Labs for Ocean Sciences, the 7 Lakes Alliance,
and numerous state or federal environmental agencies. Colby has observer status
with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the Conference of the
Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
where we annually send a delegation of faculty and students. In 2013 Colby was
the fourth college or university in the United States to declare net zero
carbon emissions. Colby’s ongoing efforts towards sustainability includes green
building development and significant resources for student environmental
