Yes, your data should work fine, too.
At least a csv file like the following works right:
id year lat long
1 "<[2004.0, 2008.0]; [2009.0, 2011.0]>" "<[2004.0, 2008.0, 50.701024];
[2009.0, 2011.0, 42.359242]>" "<[2004.0, 2008.0, 7.10364]; [2009.0, 2011.0,

Make sure to choose space as separator and the year column type as Time
Interval.
Also make sure to use latest Gephi version with updates.
