The law applies to all mammals. The law is changing. From next month
cats and dogs from certain countries will be allowed into the country as
long as they are chipped and they have been inoculated against rabies.

This is a trial but it is likely to be extended. The NGS has taken part
in the Government's consultation on the changes in the rabies laws. We
are disappointed that although their own experts say that small caged
mammals are not a disease risk there are no early proposals to improve
the current situation for anything other than cats and dogs.

The eventual position is likely to be that gerbils can be imported from
NW Europe. Ferrets and rabbits are likely to still be restricted as the
risks of them importing disease is higher and in the case of rabbits,
there are rabbit farms that could be damaged by an imported disease.
