But don't you see, that's not the issue.
The issue is that the act of sending that chain letter to the list is
not only against the rules of the list, and against the rules of your
ISP (AOL); it is also illegal.
Whether or not AOL will do anything significant about it, you need to
understand that it was wrong. Your attitude that it doesn't matter
whether you do something wrong as long as you don't get punished, is
also wrong.
There's really nothing left to say about this that hasn't already been
said, but I thought that last post deserved a response.
