All the messages to you travel from Rice University to you. But before
they get their, they have to get from the poster to Rice University.
If you study the headers of the e-mails you should see that they often
take different routes between one place and another. The internet was
designed to survive major disruption. It does this be always searching
for new routes between a and b. The more routes there are the easier
traffic flows. Obviously more routes means messages will sometimes
travel further, or more likely, get help up on a machine temporarily for
some reason.
The times in the headers will also show you where messages are being
held up.
