When gerbil mothers give their pups "a wash" there is hardly any water
involved. It's more like brushing. So if you want to imitate this, just
take a rough cloth like a frottee (?) towel and give them a massage
(especially their tummies after eating). Bathing with water is
unnecessary and may be dangerous.
