HI everyone.
As most of you know I have been having a real
hard time finding homes for al my gerbil babies. So I have just given
up.....No not the pet store, but I'm keeping all of them. As part of my
birthday present I am getting a new 10 gallon tank, lid and some other
stuff. But I already seperated the Father from the mother and children
with the intention of pairing him up with a male from the litter. Now
The time has come when I have to pair them up. He is 5 weeks old! Most
of you recomend the split cage method which I am all fine with, but
others say that if you add a youngster with an older gerbil it works out
without any special introductions. Now I need the advice of you guys.
What should I do? Should I just change the bedding and plop the lil guy
into the cage at the same time I plop the big guy in so that they will
each think that they are in the other's territory? or should I do that
but just add split cage? I really need your help guys. Thanks a lot

Steven - Because the son is smaller than the father you can just put him
in with the father. But supervise to make sure all is ok. If you are
going to keep them all, put all the smaller males with dad and leave the
daughters with mom. Spare tanks/cages will be needed for the future,
in case of territory disputes or dominance disputes. On trash days look
for old tanks, refrigerator bins, refrigerator wire shelves, old bird
cages, anything that can be used in an emergency to house gerbils. Also
keep the tanks simple, don't use many levels or attachments. Keep the
males and the females in separate rooms. This arrangement will also give
you more time to find homes, until you are left with 2 males and 2
females which is safer.
