You never know when a cat or dog's instincts will take
over.  To me, the important thing in such a case is to make
sure the lid is a good, tight-fitting one that the gerbils
can't possibly get out of, and the cat/dog can't possibly
open.  And of course make sure they're out of the room when
dealing with the gerbils.  Two of my pups went to people
with a cat.  I saw the setup they had, there was a lock on
the lid.
