I bought my gerbils a really big cage (with a deep bottom filled with woodshavings so
that they could dig) and they massacred the bottom of it! - so I had to put them back
in their tank!
They loved running about onto the various levels in the cage but could not resist
chewing the bottom of it to pieces. Was a shame but never mind! :-)

The only time I have noticed strong uring smell is when they are peeing on
plastic>plastic wheel, tubes, toys. Is the cage bottom plastic? If you can't
get rid of the plastic, if that's the problem, clean them out more often and
use hot soapy water to wash out the bottom cage portion. Rinse it well and
dry it with paper towel. As far as them being fat, how big are their cages
and do they have access to a wheel for exercise? A low fat diet like Hilary
suggests would be helpful too. Leave the food bowl in for a couple of days
to make sure they are eating most of the mix and not just the desserts.
