Dirt Home Setup

Has anyone heard of putting dirt into an aquarium and letting the gerbils tunnel in it?  If anyone has would you please describe the setup for me.  Would potting soil work or is this dangerous because of the fertalizers in it?   Thanks in advance   Jamie
