I have never found the need to wash a gerbil. If they have greasy coats, then letting them bathe in chinchilla dust is far more agreeable for them. However, my petshop stocks a shampoo for rodents called "dirty rat" and i would assume that using something that is formulated for rodent fur rather than human skin would be better if you really had to wash one.
