If you have two males with a female and they are all less than 10 weeks old, you can leave them together until she has a litter. If not you can take him back before his tankmates forget him. You can also buy a baby male gerbil for a companion. After the pups are 4 weeks, you can put a daughter with mom into a new tank. The two males can remain in the original tank. The mother will have one more litter though. Some have been able to have breeding setups with 2 males and a female with no problems. Mine eventually fought because of dominance issues between the males or disputes over mating rights.
