Did you see any fighting? It is not uncommon for gerbils to injure
themselves whilst cleaning their ears with the long nails of their back
feet. it is most likely this is what happened. It can be a sign of mites
(the injury being due to excessive scratching).
Look for very small mites. The wound should heal without any problem.
