It could be ringworm. Especially if it has been warm and humid.
Dust the gerbil with athlete's foot powder (Dactarin) and see if it
starts to clear up. You will need to dust regularly for some time,
several weeks, and destroy and bedding and thoroughly clean out any
tanks or cages.
Also look out for ringworm on other pets. And make sure you don't have
any pinkish, dry itchy patches of skin as humans can get it as well!
