I've only had one non-spayed cat (spayed during the c. section that
commenced, but more on that later). She started labor under my bed around
dawn one morning, and it sounded a little like this:
"RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeee-eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-eeeeeee
eeerrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!"
Imagine waking from a deep sleep to THAT noise coming loudly from under your
bed!
Unfortunately, she delivered I don't remember how many stillborn, premature
kittens. There was evidence that they had suffered some kind of distress
while *in utero*. (I had no idea that a pregnant cat should have prenatal
care just like a human--I learned my lesson about researching pet care!). I
could feel one more kitten in there but she was contentedly cleaning herself
in a very proud-of-herself manner so I watched her awhile then took her to
the vet. An Xray confirmed that there were more kittens. I opted for a c.
section over labor induction because I didn't think any live kittens in
there would tolerate an induced labor and I wanted her spayed anyway. There
was only one kitten remaining and I took it home and fed it human formula
when the cat rejected it. It died about two days later in my hand. I think
I'll stick to gerbils (Jasmine should "whelp" any day now!)
