Hi,

You can use wood, as a cage, but I don't recommend it because, gerbils love to chew on 
wood, and would probably demolish the cage in less than a year.  If all the edges on 
the inside are rounded then it might be worth a try.  The other problem is that gerbil 
urine is very concentrated, and the wood will absorb it.  Later on, when you've had 
the gerbils for awhile the wood will start to smell very bad, and it'll be a nightmare 
to clean it.  So, it can work, but a 10 gallon Aquarium would be more in order in this 
situation.  If you do want to try it for awhile, it's ok, but make sure to put a good 
layer of litter down.
