We put some in a soup bowl (so it was a bit deeper) in their play
box, and just watched them. It took a good few minutes of
exploration, but one of the gerbs (Chandler) decided to roll in
it, and loved it so much that he was hard to part from it. Now we
put it in the box or cage for a while every week or so, and he
still loves it, but Monica will roll every now and again (when
she's in the mood).
We put it in the cage when the last litter was about 4 weeks, and
all 6 of them were fighting to get in and roll at the same time!
What a sight! LOL
Give them time and they'll probably work it out. At the very least
they'll have good fun digging and scattering (so be prepared....)
