I suspect this isn't a even someone with gerbils--he probably inserted a field in the document so he can insert whatever corresponds to the topic of the list. Notice he mentions gerbils twice but all the others once? That makes me suspicious that he sends a modification of this message to as many lists as he can get onto. If that's true, you gotta give him high marks for creativity!
